Back to school devotional thought:

“These children are not mine.” I remember being struck by this particular parental devotional thought way back when our girls were still so little. They are not mine, they are on loan from God. Although it was meant to be helpful, it came off as a bit scary. He could take them back at any time. It felt not like a comfort, but a loss of any control, despite the huge responsibility that parenting inherently is. And then a few years ago, I read a different take on this that gave me quite a bit of peace in this surrendering. These children are not simply on loan, they are shared custody. Both God and we are wanting what is best for them. He has chosen this specific child for this specific parent to nurture and raise with Him. How freeing to know that you are sharing this responsibility with not just an all-powerful God, but an all-loving God. One who would (and did, in Jesus) lay down his life for this child.

There are many parents who are getting ready to send their children to school. Whether it’s the first day of Kindergarten or college, know that God has your back. He has you and your children engraved on the palms of His hands. (Is. 49:16) The very same hands that were nailed to the cross to save you. The same hands that Thomas touched in doubt after Jesus’ resurrection. These hands hold your children in love.

Any good parenting relies on good communication between the parents. So share your fears and hopes and all of the messy thoughts in your heart with the One who somehow loves them even more than you do. Loves them perfectly. Just as He loves you.
